Learning blood science through play
Spark Blood Lab turns blood typing into a game. You take a patient, run an anti-A, anti-B and anti-D typing test, read the agglutination results, then select a compatible unit for transfusion — the same sequence a laboratory scientist follows, compressed into a few minutes.
The game exists because compatibility is taught badly. A static chart is easy to forget, but running the test and watching the wrong unit harm a patient is not. Players finish with a working understanding of antigens, antibodies, agglutination and the Rhesus factor.
Blood typing works by mixing a blood sample with reagents containing known antibodies. If anti-A serum makes the sample clump, A antigens are present. Clumping with anti-B means B antigens; clumping with anti-D means the sample is Rh positive. Combining those three results gives you the full group.
